Human civilization advanced for millennia without any patents at all -- the wheel, paper, or lenses have been invented in a world without patents.
In the scope of human history, patents and copyrights are a relatively recent invention. "
It is true that all those items were invented without patents. It is also true that times are very different now than what they were then.
Take for example prescription drugs. To develop a new drug and jump through all of the FDA hoops to bring it to market costs over a billion dollars.No company is going to make that kind of investment without patent protection.
Software patents are a different story. That is a case of patent law being applied to something that should be covered by copyright law.
