Multimedia, AV In line with the current torrent of articles on the H.264 and Theora debate, I feel that is it unfair for the "pragmatists" to talk about Theora as if it is a stupid ideal that is useless to consumers. This article will focus on defining the terms of the debate used and make the case that Theora has a reason, if not a chance.

"[More correct is "USA citizens should fight patents". Last time I've checked, we didn't have software patents in EU.

No. I meant ALL patents.
Human civilization advanced for millennia without any patents at all -- the wheel, paper, or lenses have been invented in a world without patents.

In the scope of human history, patents and copyrights are a relatively recent invention.
"

It is true that all those items were invented without patents. It is also true that times are very different now than what they were then.

Take for example prescription drugs. To develop a new drug and jump through all of the FDA hoops to bring it to market costs over a billion dollars. No company is going to make that kind of investment without patent protection.

Software patents are a different story. That is a case of patent law being applied to something that should be covered by copyright law.
