The announcement here on OS news made me wonder how they could have a 3D driver without having a 2D driver at all. But after reading the linked article, I get the impression they first had a 2D driver of their own, then bolted Nouveau's 3D on to it, and are now in the process of replacing the 2D part of their driver with a port of Nouveau as well.
Anyway, it's good to see that the efforts of the Nouveau team bear fruit even outside of the X.org environment. While I haven't taken the plunge and installed their 3D driver yet (I just have no need for it), the 2D driver has been extremely satisfactory for me for well over a year now.
