As VP8 is already good enough for internet streaming (yes it is, stop trolling), maybe we could shift focus on improving high-resolution non-streaming codecs. Theora could still be improved, and Dirac, like all wavelet-based codecs, needs a breakthrough innovation - or it will remain as useless as JPEG2000.
It is important because if open video codecs don't jump ahead of proprietary codecs (the way audio ones did), the latter will always patent the next good idea.
