At beginning of this year MS started recruiting in the US their "Linux and Open Office Compete Lead, US Subsidiary (CSI Lead)"
This people will lead the MS strategy to compete and win share against Linux and FOSS.
The job description include items like build a solid view of FOSS communities through marketing intelligence, embrace Open Source web companies and community projects and extend FOSS community marketing/evangelism.

They will also utilize 3rd party proof points, customer testimonials, ads, PR, community marketing, analyst briefings, and field/partner readiness content, as a way to change perceptions in the industry in favour of MS and against Linux.
Unfortunately this story is be one that they will certainly fully explore for that purpose.
