Linux Lennart Poettering has posted a status update about systemd, an init/upstart alternative. systemd is able now to replace /etc/fstab and cron, and it seems it will be the default init system for Fedora 14. He has also written a post about systemd for administrators.

The more I read about systemd the more I like it. I was initially skeptical, but it seems to be coming along very fast (as opposed to, say, PulseAudio ;) ).

I was actually working on my own init system (which had a similar design to systemd), but now I think I'll just go with systemd. It seems a lot more flexible than the system I was working on, and it looks like all the major distros will be using systemd soon.
