Mozilla & Gecko clones For its upcoming Firefox 4.0 release, Mozilla has been concentrating a great deal on what is often cited as the main shortcoming of Firefox ... its speed. For example, Firefox 4.0 will include GPU acceleration for both rendering and compositing on Windows 7/Vista, OSX and Linux, and it will have GPU acceleration for compositing only for Windows XP.

The 4.0b7 branch has already been created, which is why nightlies now identify themselves as b8-pre. I've been tracking the blockers in Bugzilla and I'd expect to see b7 released the week after next (week of the 25th) based on the current progress.

I think b8 will be less ambitious than b7, which is the first release with compartments. b8 will enable per-compartment GC, which will no doubt introduce bugs but is less earth-shattering than the changes in b7.
