These days, Benoit Schillings does something else entirely: he's currently the chief technology officer at Myriad, where he and his team is working on Alien Dalvik. Now that I know he's the one leading this team, I know for sure we've got something special here.

Running without Qt

It's unlikely that Qt plays a big role here, as the point of Dalvik is that it comes with its own GUI toolkit. Probably, Qt was just a suitable windowing system to target, because it makes the whole thing portable. So if you don't have or want Qt, it's probably quite doable to port it to a different graphics/windowing system.
