smbd -V on your Snow Leopard installation, you'll see it's running SAMBA version 3.0.28a-apple. While I'm not sure how much difference the "-apple" makes, version 3.0.28a is old. Very old. In other words, it's riddled with bugs. Apple hasn't updated SAMBA in 3 years, and for Lion, they're dumping it altogether for something homegrown. The reason? SAMBA is now GPLv3.

Of course but try to explain to Joe and Jane Sixpack why they should care - they're more concerned about the boggy men (God, Guns and Gays) put up by senators and congressmen than actually demanding that these candidates put forward some coherent policies that extend beyond sound bite laden drivel. I know in the case of New Zealand outside the mainstream parties issues such as patents, intellectual property, net neutrality and so forth are discussed right up there with health, education and social welfare but once you get into the big mainstream parties such topics aren't even on the radar.
