Say what you like about XP and its GUI. Fact is that it's still perfectly usable 11 years after release. And what's more, the majority of current Windows software still works on it.
Compare and contrast to RedHat 7.1 which was released at broadly the same time. Impossible to get current software installed on it, and essentially unusable with the outdated Gnome 1.2 desktop.
