I wonder if dirac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirac_%28video_compression_format~...) has ever been considered as an alternative.
It's drawbacks are know: No widerspread use, nor SoC support (but there is hardware supporting Dirac).
On the other hand: It is optimized for high resolutions and up to 16-bit colordepth (!), it has a lossless mode, it is royality free, propose as VC-2 to SMPTE, can be used inside a Matroska-Container, good software support (via libschroedinger/gstreamer) and decoding performance is not that bad on modern hardware.
