Every time we attain something described, up to that point, as "artificial intelligence" ...we stop calling it AI ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_effect )

Seems that some AI researchers even do it on purpose, to avoid stigma from past hypes, perhaps also from "cargo cult science fiction" that the linked interview does a bit too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_winter#AI_under_different_names (and for sure "AI behind the scenes" just below)

(plus, I imagine that the experience of tech singularity would be something closer to Solaris, not "your personal heaven" - and almost certainly nothing like the stupid Skynet and its conceptually broken minions ;) )

PS. And is the funding really so poor? After a few cycles of hype-disappointment, it's probably roughly adequate, sound ideas sooner or later get it - but throw much more money at the field "on principle" and you'll probably end up with tons of dubious, wasteful activities (but the people wanting to do them would be happy, maybe that's the whole point)
