I really like having a hierarchical filesystem and find not having it available in iOS limiting. I like to move compatible documents through various programs that have there own strengths. The diversity allows me to do my best work, because I can take advantage of the best tool for any particular aspect of my work. The document centric world makes that kind of workflow easier, where as the app centric world is moving in a direction that prevents it. Not only is my iPad a walled garden, but the apps are becoming ivory towers within it.
Apple has done some tricks in the past that I have liked to simplify the clutter of files. I like Apples notion of making apps a bundle that appears as a file.... but in reality it can be opened to reveal a hierarchy of sub files within. Some more complex formats like Keynote employ the same technique to hide that they are in-fact, a configuration of files. It is also nice having the ability to flatten the view of the filesystem through the "All My Files" view. However, I have far too many documents to manage them effectively with just that flat view of my files.
I like the notion of moving everything into meta-data... but I would still like the filesystem metaphor to be available as a view. Gmail comes to mind as a good example of someone doing this already.
