PDAs, Cellphones, Wireless In light of the jury verdict in Apple vs. Samsung, the one-liners and jokes flew back and forth. One in particular, by Dan Frakes, has been copied and pasted all over the web, and it goes like this: "When the iPhone debuted, it was widely criticized for having no buttons/keys. Now people think the iPhone's design is 'obvious'." This is a very common trend in this entire debate that saddens me to no end: the iPhone is being compared to simple feature phones, while in fact, it should be compared to its true predecessor: the PDA. PDAs have always done with few buttons.

Newsflash, I am 42 so I am in the generation who grew up on Tandy computers, TI computers,Caldera Linux and Corel Linux. Who saw MS kill companies like Banyan and Novel, Corel, Lotus, Quatro Pro etc, etc, etc.

But unlike you I know that crying over the past wont change the future, so I deal with the here and now.

And the here and now is Apple and Microsoft and why are they the here in now? Because even though they didn't invent most of the stuff they now control, they took those ideas and made them profitable and popular! Thats how business works.

Its the reason that companies like Banyan and Novel who had way better products then Microsoft are dead. Great engineers but horrible business skills. Thats not Apple or Microsofts fault, it just boils down to the fact that no mater how great a product is and no matter how much it was built on ideals etc, if it can't sell then who the hell cares.

And you might not be techy, that's cool, but no mater how you try and flip it and show that a few non tech people care, in reality 99% of people don't care! They are not gonna stop buying iPhones because its a PDA clone or stop using Twitter because its an IRC clone or stop using Google and go back to Yahoo. Just not gonna happen! Just like no one stopped buying iPods cause Apple didn't invent it.

Everyday people don't want to write applications, people just want to pick up their tech and use it to make everyday life faster and to be connected. Which is why Apple is so popular. No one wants to fiddle with tech if they don't have to. They just want to pick it up and it mostly work. Doctors, psychologists, economists, professors, historians at least in America are some of the LAST people to get on the tech bandwagon. Most doctors are tech adverse which is why the government is almost forcing them to go to digital medical records and things of that nature.

In the end we are just going back and forth the reality is Apple, MS and even Google are here to stay. The lawsuits and crazy patents are here to stay. Get over it.
