Proprietary software one again seeking to slow down free software just enough to keep the consumer annoyed.
Also be careful what you call "free" software.
Linux the kernel is Free, and that's the compatibility we're talking about at the chipset level. But as for the broader OS, we're probably not talking about Free GNU/Linux, but about proprietary Android (Linux kernel + open but stolen-from-Sun's-proprietary toolchain + proprietary UI and Google client apps).
