I use Gnome Shell at work and think it's great, but it all depends how you use it.

In general I don't have any overlapping windows, and a consistent first 4 workspaces:
1. IDE
2. 2x Terminals (for compiling, git etc), File manager & Test Editor, tiled to use 1/4 of the screen each
3. Web browser
4. Email client
Temporary windows on new workspaces as needed
Fits my workflow very well and very few distractions I never have to go clicking through a tiny taskbar looking for the window I want
