Windows A few days ago, Microsoft released the long-awaited Windows Phone 7.8 update for all those users who will be stuck on Windows Phone 7 forever because there's no upgrade path to Windows Phone 8 other than buying a new phone. Now that it's here, what, exactly, does WP7.8 to the table?

I don't know where to start

There is so much wrong here I don't know where to start. First of all, I'll qualify myself by saying I owned a Lumia 900 and I have a 920, so I'm a WP user and I had WP 7.5. Now, it was necessary for Microsoft to move to the NT kernel, no one can deny that. It was NOT necessary for them to give people who had older phones a concession prize in the form of 7.8. What happened to not looking a gift horse in the mouth? I'll never understand why people get worked up about not getting major OS updates on mobile devices. Most people buy a new one every 2 years anyway and even when you do get a MAJOR update, it usually slows the phone down and causes problems. OK, with that out of the way, this review is just misguided and ill informed. Microsoft never promised anything more than what they delivered. Furthermore you say developers will have to make two versions of their apps, that is nonsense. A single version which will run on both 7.5/7.8 AND 8 can be written. Most existing apps already run on both versions of the OS. 5 minutes of research would have told you that. In another year or so the only people even using 7.5/7.8 devices will be cheapskates who hang onto their phones for 5 years, most people will have Windows Phone 8 and all of this complaining will have been for nothing. Be grateful you got 7.8 at all. Microsoft didn't "owe" you anything. You buy the phone as-is, no informed consumer should ever buy something like a smartphone and just assume there will be endless OS updates and that it will run a major rewrite of the OS. It's simply not reasonable to ask for that, and its not reasonable to ask progress to be held back to keep people on 3-4 year old phones happy. That is absurd. So use 7.8 and enjoy your resizable tiles for a while and then do what everyone else does and buy a new device instead of clinging to an obsolete one and crying about it.
