Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu Mark Shuttleworth: "I simply have zero interest in the crowd who wants to be different. Leet. 'Linux is supposed to be hard so it's exclusive' is just the dumbest thing that a smart person could say." He's right. Lots of interesting insights in this blog post - I may not agree with everything Ubuntu does, but at least it's doing something.

You say user-driven, but where are the users for Mint or Linux in general? Desktop Linux has failed, seeing this, Canonical has decided to try to create something that can change that situation. Linux Mint is for people who resist change at all costs, they have essentially recreated Windows 95 out of a modern desktop - its underpinnings are still essentially Gnome Shell.

Why would people move to Linux when there is nothing appealing which is actually tangible? Sure, there is the story about low cost, but for most computer users, the OS is free anyway when they buy their computer - few actually care that the price is included in the purchase. Unity Touch is truly stunning, and is already getting rave reviews by the mainstream. People actually want Linux because it is better, not because it is cheap.
