Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu Mark Shuttleworth: "I simply have zero interest in the crowd who wants to be different. Leet. 'Linux is supposed to be hard so it's exclusive' is just the dumbest thing that a smart person could say." He's right. Lots of interesting insights in this blog post - I may not agree with everything Ubuntu does, but at least it's doing something.

Sure, because Ubuntu wouldn't even exist if someone else was offering something better in the opinion of Mark. He has invested in Ubuntu because nothing else really addressed what he thought Linux could be. He made a lot of money off of Linux in the server space, and now he is pumping that back into the community.

Maybe he is wrong, maybe what he thinks Linux is lacking is a total non-issue for mainstream users, maybe Linux isn't popular because people just don't care about software. Maybe just getting Linux onto hardware will be enough to make Linux popular. Maybe all this work to deliver something beautiful is meaningless, it was just a matter of delivering it by default.

I personally certainly don't mind the eye-candy though.
