Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu Mark Shuttleworth: "I simply have zero interest in the crowd who wants to be different. Leet. 'Linux is supposed to be hard so it's exclusive' is just the dumbest thing that a smart person could say." He's right. Lots of interesting insights in this blog post - I may not agree with everything Ubuntu does, but at least it's doing something.

Maybe he is wrong, maybe what he thinks Linux is lacking is a total non-issue for mainstream users, maybe Linux isn't popular because people just don't care about software. Maybe just getting Linux onto hardware will be enough to make Linux popular. Maybe all this work to deliver something beautiful is meaningless, it was just a matter of delivering it by default.

What Linux needs most of all is a good, 'idiot proof' distro. Something I can install for my mom and basically not have to worry about it anymore. In other words, something equivalent to a desktop-like iOS experience ;)

I'm not sure if ChromeOS qualifies as a 'Linux distro', but I'd say that looks promising. Not only because it's pre-configured to run on specific hardware, but also because it seems to be set up in such a way that 'normal' users cant hurt themselves, and power users can open it up to install a full-blown Linux distro, if they wish.
