What Linux needs most of all is a good, 'idiot proof' distro. Something I can install for my mom and basically not have to worry about it anymore. In other words, something equivalent to a desktop-like iOS experience
I'm not sure if ChromeOS qualifies as a 'Linux distro', but I'd say that looks promising. Not only because it's pre-configured to run on specific hardware, but also because it seems to be set up in such a way that 'normal' users cant hurt themselves, and power users can open it up to install a full-blown Linux distro, if they wish.
