Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu Mark Shuttleworth: "I simply have zero interest in the crowd who wants to be different. Leet. 'Linux is supposed to be hard so it's exclusive' is just the dumbest thing that a smart person could say." He's right. Lots of interesting insights in this blog post - I may not agree with everything Ubuntu does, but at least it's doing something.

I actually have the original Chrome OS machine that Google was giving out a while ago. While it is nice, it really highlights the continued need for native applications. I am hopefully that the various parties pushing for HTML5 will eventually get to a good place, but as NaCl shows, not everyone will want to use it for everything even when they can.

I think what Canonical is aiming at is for you to not have to install Linux on your Mom's computer, rather that her system comprise FOSS by default. For this, there has to be a compelling reason for her to be drawn to it, and I think Canonical is delivering that with Ubuntu Touch - which will be coming to desktops eventually.
