Written by someone who actually contributes code to the Windows NT kernel, the comment on Hacker News, later deleted but reposted with permission on Marc Bevand's blog, paints a very dreary picture of the state of Windows development. I am talking about my 8 processor Xeon machine at work.

I don't honestly know whether it is virtual box or the distro. But Windows 8 works pretty damn well, and anything with lots of 3D compositing (Gnome 3, Unity) seems to very badly.
