What happened to the conspiracy theorists who came out of the woodwork and said that Clover Trail being Windows 8 exclusive initially was the end of the world?

Well since the technology isn't windows 8 only, it won't be a problem. Besides, while I do remember a fuss, I would hardly call it end of world. Intel is too heavily invested in Linux. Now if Microsoft tried that kind of move, I would worry.
