Linux I volunteer as tech support for a small organization. For years we relied on Ubuntu on our desktops, but the users didn't like it when Ubuntu switched to the Unity interface. This article tells about our search for a replacement and why we decided on Xfce running atop Linux Mint.

Though, I still see them dropping it as slimming the compilation down a bit. I don't understand why reducing bloat is considered a bad thing.

Probably because what you call bloat is the very reason some, like myself, prefer kde over any other *n[iu]x DE/WM. There is a need to some tweaks but this is way better than it is to not has options at all.
