Google back in 2005:

There will be no banner ads on the Google homepage or web search results pages.

Google today:

The company confirmed to the Guardian that it is testing a system with about 30 advertisers in the US in which it shows banner ads for companies including SouthWest Airlines on pages which include them in web search results.

And people wonder why I have zero trust in companies.

"Maybe just steer them in the direction they have interest in?"

Hey I'm all for laissez faire as long as they can be self-dependent. However if they're going to become a protracted liability for many years into adulthood, then I consider that it's both our right and responsibility to help guide them in their economic choices, if not for their sake, then at least for ours.

Edit: I'm not meaning to sound cold here. I love my kids and want them to be happy. However economic realities don't always provide us with the means to do what we want.
