X11, Window Managers David Reveman of Novell shares his thoughts on Xgl, Metacity, and more."I've been getting a lot of mail from people asking me about my thoughts on AIGLX, the GL compositing work being done on Metacity and nVidia's xdevconf paper. Instead of replying to everyone individually, I though I'd send a mail to the Xorg list."

Both seem like good solutions

I'm afraid I am a little technically challenged so please correct me if I'm wrong but from my understanding xgl is a replacement X server and AIGLX is a plugin for X.

If I'm right in my understanding then both seem like logical paths to me as long as support is there.

The sad part is I wish all the hardware vendors made high quality drivers. If the author is correct and AIGLX will only support high quality video drivers (only nvidia) then the AIGLX model has little support for alternate hardware and needs to write their plugin to support non high quality video card drivers. Either way both still sound like good solutions but I just don't like being limited to what hardware or desktop environment.
