I've learnt that professors are generally professors (at least in university) because they know there stuff. I'd believe them.
From what I know, gcc *does* generate terrible code. It's not entirely the gcc developers fault though. Supposedly many optimization techiques are patented.
Anyways, I think gcc certainly has recently improved the most out of the apps listed. Of course, I suppose that's not what the poll asked though. Tough question, this poll. I'm fairly suprised that Mozilla is so favoured.
