but try this (from somewhat fuzzy memory):
I can't remember if this was GNOME, KDE, or a dream (about GUIs? How sad
1) Navigate to the folder.
2) type "*xyz*" in the location box. Hit enter
3) Select all resulting files (there may be a keyboard shortcut for this)
4) Click delete from wherever (menu, toolbar, right click, keyboard)
