Debian and its clones Debian is not quite like any other distro out there. If bigger is better, then Debian wins hands down. Aside from having the largest collection of free software packages, Debian also runs on 11 platforms. But there is more to Debian than just size. Network installation doesn't look debian like

I think the debian way is to edit /etc/network/interfaces (Package ifupdown). That said the configuration would look something like this:
...
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

To apply the settings simply type:
/etc/init.d/network restart
