Linux will become ubiquitous in the year 3000. Okay, that was a horrible joke. Linux is just a kernel, the engine that runs an operating system. By itself, it is essentially useless. Kernels shouldn't be discussed or noticed by normal users. And as such when providing these users with reviews, previews and "professional" opinions, computer consultants, computer reviewers and computer journalists should not spew headlines like "Linux is not ready for prime time", "Linux on the desktop by XXX", "Linux to takeover Windows", "Linux is not ready for desktop" and so on.
I think the author brings up a lot of valid points. First off, everything needs to work if you're going to get people to switch.
I know I've had hardware support problems here before.
Then there's the apps. I agree, most either have really bad docs or none at all! And really Linux apps don't offer anything more than Windows apps.
I'm all for open source, in fact I run a ton of open source apps here, and I have a couple Linux boxes running mostly network services. But for me, Linux is just too much of a hassle to run as my desktop OS.
And when are they ever going to fix the fonts?? Even with all the latest and greatest fonts for Linux they're still not as good as the fonts in Windows.
So for now I stick with Windows. Even though I can't stand Microsoft. Ease of use means a lot to me, as it does to most people. I love playing with Linux and I fully support it. But it's not ready for my desktop...
