Linux Linux will become ubiquitous in the year 3000. Okay, that was a horrible joke. Linux is just a kernel, the engine that runs an operating system. By itself, it is essentially useless. Kernels shouldn't be discussed or noticed by normal users. And as such when providing these users with reviews, previews and "professional" opinions, computer consultants, computer reviewers and computer journalists should not spew headlines like "Linux is not ready for prime time", "Linux on the desktop by XXX", "Linux to takeover Windows", "Linux is not ready for desktop" and so on.

RE:Companies that show us how it should be done

heh, good points except one. lindows. i have no problem with making a buck off of open source, if this model is going to work, that is what will happen. but, i do have a problem with charging a yearly rate for apt-get with a pretty front end. i mean, theres a difference between making a buck and fleecing your customers.

while i agree with the fact we need to be more accepting of the more capitalist OSS companies, we also have to remember what sets us apart. as it stands, 95% of commercial linux companies are companies operating with honour. while that may seem to be an insignificant moral abstraction for some, for others it isnt. why does virtually every distro provide free downloads of not only the source, but complete working copies of their products? because they have to? no. because by doing so they give back to the community that creates what they make a living off of. that i respect a great deal, and will continue supporting. lindows is fantastic for newbs, probably one of the best newb distros. but i will never support them, or recommend them. because they are applying the same "get ahead, no matter what the cost" principles to the GPL world as is normal in the propriatary software world.
