Linux will become ubiquitous in the year 3000. Okay, that was a horrible joke. Linux is just a kernel, the engine that runs an operating system. By itself, it is essentially useless. Kernels shouldn't be discussed or noticed by normal users. And as such when providing these users with reviews, previews and "professional" opinions, computer consultants, computer reviewers and computer journalists should not spew headlines like "Linux is not ready for prime time", "Linux on the desktop by XXX", "Linux to takeover Windows", "Linux is not ready for desktop" and so on.
Wrawrat,
I'll agree we come from different angles, but if I may. Just as there are car enthusiasts and sound enthusiasts who wonder why the general public doesn't appreciate their market, there are those in the computer marker.
Playing CDs has as much to do with driving a car as playing cheesy games has to do with instant messaging. I don't know about you, but I would like my car to have a nice mp3-deck nicely installed. Metaphors aside, I think playing cheesy games is something many people would consider an IM related activity.
As to efficiency. I stopped counting startup ram use a long time ago other such issues a long time ago. I bought the cheapest new system I could at the time I bought my PC, and it runs windows XP and the like just fine. I guess the diffence here is I don't consider messenger inefficient or wasteful. I haven't noticed any performance difference between messenger and trillian. Messenger may even be faster. But I'm not going to touch that one
Sadly, I cannot say the same about windows media nine. It's really slow on my system and has some full screen control bar issues. Hence, I don't use it. I've been thinking of dumping winamp3 as well for winamp2, but that's another issue.
