Editorial "640K ought to be enough for anybody." Bill Gates, 1981. "64 bit is coming to desktops, there is no doubt about that, But apart from Photoshop, I can't think of desktop applications where you would need more than 4 gigabytes of physical memory, which is what you have to have in order to benefit from this technology." It seems to me that by the time it ships, Longhorn will need 4 gigs of RAM.

Good news for Free Software
by Charlie on Fri 17th Oct 2003 18:50 UTC

By the time 'Longhorn' is released, Free Software will have a significant reputation and presence in the corporate world that 'Longhorn' may not be enough for the Behemoth to retain it's monopoly.

There's a point at which Free Software will simply explode onto the scene and it's close to that point; when there'll be bigger and more skilled workforce developing the software than even Microsoft can match.

Microsoft may well be heading (in 10 years time or so) for more niche markets like tablet PCs, gaming consoles, and other more embedded markets. It's almost impossible to justify buying Microsoft Office over OpenOffice.org 1.1 - imagine how it will be several years in the future!
