It seems to me that by the time it ships, Longhorn will need 4 gigs of RAM.

Hehe...Microsoft has many of the same issues. I have many a time experienced decreased performance or additional problems after using Windows Update to get an update that microsoft took days and days to post. This is a documented fact (although I couldn't find an article on it right now).
You later say that Major distros often don't include the patch. Well...it's a free country I guess...LINUX is always available and updateable.
