X11, Window Managers The new X Server developed under the sponsorship of freedesktop.org is aiming at replacing XFree86. Some code will be re-used but the core will be rewritten by Keith Packard and others. The new X server features full support for transparency, and has window-level image compositing among other things. Check out the screenshots (one more added, now there are four shots).

KP&JG Interview request

I think it would be great to have an interview with Keith Packard and Jim Gettys about where they see the fd.o Xserver and Xlibs project going. More specifically what the new kdrive driver infrastructure is all about and how they plan on dealing Nvidia and ATI to port their drivers to this new Xserver quickly and without a lot of fuss. I image it could go smoothly if redhat, debian, suse, etc.. all get behind this.
