X11, Window Managers The new X Server developed under the sponsorship of freedesktop.org is aiming at replacing XFree86. Some code will be re-used but the core will be rewritten by Keith Packard and others. The new X server features full support for transparency, and has window-level image compositing among other things. Check out the screenshots (one more added, now there are four shots).

Transparent Windows
by blitzoid on Tue 11th Nov 2003 22:26 UTC

I realize that for 99% of the world, having transparent windows is just useless eyecandy, but some some people (Like me) it's VERY useful.

For instance, I could be working on code or something in an editor window, and below that window could be a browser open to some website with a FAQ or something that I need to read as I'm coding. Having a setup like this would be very useful, since I can have both apps fullscreen and not have to switch between them.

This actually came up yesterday as I wished X would get transparent window support. Perhaps I'm psychic and am influencing the freedesktop developers? Hehe.
