Original OSNews Interviews The voice, the man, the... machine. That's George Hoffman for you. According to people who have worked with him (including my husband) he is one of the brightest Be, Inc. engineers ever. These days, George works at PalmSource, Inc. as the Director of Applications and Services. In his free time he sings with an (a cappella) vocal band of 4, Hookslide (check out their .wmv promo video clip)! In this interview we talk about PalmOS 6, aka Cobalt. We discuss the architecture of the OS, its capabilities, its market targets and more. Screenshots of Cobalt are included.

Native file types in os6

From what I gathered at palmsource, you wont need special conduits for files like mp3, doc, xls. You can now install them directly to a palm and the default app on your palm will store them to the internal format. The other important thing to remember with os6 is the 64k record size limit in pdb files is gone so files can be stored without needing to be broken up.

Personally, im glad palm doesnt use the traditional FAT type file system. I like the way an app and all of its related files are linked by a creator code. Why do I care what the physical filename is on the palm as long as my app can locate it easily? Even m$ has ceded that it sucks and is moving to winFS.
