One of the Palm OS Cobalt features not mentioned is HotSync Exchange. This lets you sync any file to the device. On the device, it is received through Exchange Manager by the application that uses it, just as if it were beamed to the device. This means apps that handle native types can accept those files without needing a desktop converter.
