Features, Office O'Reilly's latest entry in the "Pocket" series, "Linux Pocket Guide", bills itself as a "quick reference for experienced users and a guided tour for beginners".

3) and again on page 37, the example at the end of point 4 won't work because after the user "su -l"'s, they'll be sitting in the root user's homepage and the "make install" command won't work from there. These last two errors are probably the result of too much brevity.

Incorrect. When you su to root, the shell maintains the directory you were in as root's current path. When you exit, however, you return to wherever su was called from, not where you last were as root.
