David Dawes is maybe the most active XFree86 developer and he is also the lead founder of the project. He works for Tungsten Graphics, which is the main company working on the XFree, DRI and Mesa codebases today. It's much more lightweight (27kb). Haven't really looked into it yet. Of course it's not useful for all the existing libraries and apps that use xlib, but I can imagine there's some people who are really interested in it. (embedded space)
Everyone agrees on XLib being crufty. However, I've heard there's an alternative for XLib called XCB.
