David Dawes is maybe the most active XFree86 developer and he is also the lead founder of the project. He works for Tungsten Graphics, which is the main company working on the XFree, DRI and Mesa codebases today. rajan_r: I wasn't saying Berlin/fresco's development cycle was slow. It is, but considering the scope of the project I think they're doing very well. I just meant it was currently unoptimized.
As for running X rootless, i did mean running X with superuser privileges as Bascule pointed out.
ealm: well, i think with the evas example you just proved my point. To take advantage of the hardware acceleration you need to rewrite your app using evas. In other words: the apps you currently use (GTK apps, KDE apps, ...) won't suddenly work better because you've got hw-acceleration and evas.
In any case, I had a chance to see Rasterman's presentation at LinuxTag 2001 - it was _very_ impressive speed wise, even his software rendering. I'm curious to see how far it has come since then. It was still very device dependent - very pixel based.
