I just compiled Inkscape-CVS on my Slackware and it loaded keys.svg in 9 seconds too. However, this is an AthlonXP 1600+ machine with 512 MB of RAM. While it was loading it, the whole window was unrefreshed and was looking like dead. A spinning cursor should have being better with the window fully refreshed on the background -- or optimize the engine more so it loads faster.
And one more request: please upgrade to libsigc++ 2.0, I had that installed on my slackware, but not the 1.2 version that ./configure asked me for.
