As a PostgreSQL developer, I will happily endorse the idea that MySQL has done some things better than us, just as the reverse is true. But "it's generally accepted that they have faster development"?!? Huh? Where did that come from?
While we've been waiting for MySQL to add all of the features promised in 4.0 (most of which have been put off until 5.0, with no release date in sight) the PostgreSQL community has released versions 7.3 and 7.4 -- each of which had 4-5 major new database features. So, by my count, PostgreSQL development is just about twice as fast as MySQL development.
