Oh man, after reading that article I think I've been updating my kernel the wrong way. I use reiserfs as the file system, and when I build a kernel I have never selected initrd. I just select reiserfs to be compiled into the kernel, and after configuring everything else and building and installing the kernel, it boots up on next reboot. Initrd isn't mandatory/necessary is it? Would I the mere laptop user have any advantage of using this initrd as opposed to not using it?
