If your kernel is working without initrd, then it doesn't need it. The benifits of using this mechinism are in getting the kernel as modular as possible, and small as possible. It especially helps when distos distribute a kernel in binary form that must work on many hardware configurations. Without initrd, these binary kernels would have to have every possible driver needed to boot compiled into the kernel.
