Well, you can do a "generic" monolithic kernel with Linux. However, most Linux distributions are putting everything in modules and have hardware detection routines instead. I think it's a better way to go than lumping everything in a fatty kernel. Basically, it's something that is distro-dependant. Of course, that's my opinion.
