Mono Project Sure, everyone knows Tomboy, F-spot, Beagle, MonoDevelop, Muine, Blam! or Monodoc. But there are a lot of other interesting Mono/GTK# applications out there that need your attention. java is most definitely cross platform. I tried running 2 year old java code, that was developed and tested windows only in Fedora Core with no problems.

You can, of course, write windows only programs if you try, by , for example using c:/ without thinking of unix filesystems, but you have to really try.
