Editorial Wishful thinking? Yes, but let's consider the possibilities. The last couple years have seen significant advances in hardware production and design. One of the more interesting (and potentially revolutionary) developments to take place this past year is the announcement of a new CPU, the STI (Sony, Toshiba, IBM) Cell processor.

The processor sounds like it could really bring a lot to the table (estimates for the PS3), yet the problem is how to do so for the desktop. So you take an operating system that does not exist and match it with a processor that does not yet exist and voilą! I believe Sony or IBM said they would develop a desktop with this processor. Just port linux. If you want simplicity, don't install worthless crap. Just because Google does search well, doesn't mean that they will make a good OS. People were upset that their mail system would allow others to see your emails (I believe that had to do with customizing ads on the webpage). An innovative company they may be, but they are not perrfect.
