Linux I've only been using GNU/Linux since 2001, so I won't say that I'm by any means an expert yet, as most of those that are reading this, probably have been using Linux much longer than I have. However, I still have high hopes for the Linux scene. The purpose of this article is to voice my personal opinion on what I feel is keeping GNU/Linux from taking over the mainstream operating system market. My intentions aren't to "badtalk" the open source kernel+apps, but rather give constructive criticsm on what I personally feel it could be done better.

You're exactly right on all counts, but there is so much groupthink out there that the current model is the best, don't expect things to change.

Someone has to step up to the plate and standardize some stuff - someone with deep pockets. "Buehler.....Buehler...Buehler...IBM....IBM....IBM"?

Maybe the only real hope for Linux on the desktop is Mono, since in 7-8 years almost all new windows apps will be .NET based, that coupled with Wine.

Or.....someone steps up, takes the kernel and does something radically different with the userspace that distinguishes itself from Yet Another Distro.
