Red Hat Gentoo, Lindows and Lycoris arguably were the big surprises of the year in the Linux land, but everyone is waiting the release of Red Hat 8.0 with, possibly, the biggest anticipation ever for a Linux distribution. Since Red Hat posted the Limbo and Null betas, fans of the most popular distribution on earth were making waves and even called this new version a Windows killer. Does this really hold up though? Is it a good desktop alternative?

Thanks for your article Eugenia. I know from what you said this release is NOT a windows killer. But does it make it a good alternative for the MS convert?

Also, have you got a review on Mandrake 9.0 and how it compares to Redhat 8.0. Other than Mandrakes own sites, I haven't seen any. Can you help. Thanks in advance.
