OSNews, Generic OSes Yeah, I might be just re-inventing the wheel here, who knows? But I had this (original? I doubt it) idea a few months ago and I was meant to write about it for some time now. So, my idea is about creating a new operating system that is like none of the current ones. It would be so different, that porting applications from other "traditional" systems wouldn't be possible. But the gains would be much more important of what we would lose by implementing a brand new new system.

OS X Services?

In many ways, you can sort of do these things with OS X services. Once you get a piece of data into the clipboard (or simply selected), then a whole host of options becomes available for processing this information. It's just not done, currently, in place. It's essentially "pasted" into the new app and processed there.

But, yeah, it's essentially OpenDoc. Nothing but canvas and you get to drop bits of data wherever you want.

You can probably come pretty close to something like this today with MS Office and Visio. At least it makes a good demo.

But it is interesting, the whole hub bub over this kind of thing has pretty much died down.
